Celtic Women received a great Christmas present in the form of the signature of striker Sarah Ewens. Manager David Haley and skipper Kelly Clark were on hand at Celtic Park to make sure she received a warm Paradise welcome.

The 24-year-old former Hibernian and Spartans player is the club’s second new signing as they prepare for the 2017 summer season, joining Sarah Crilly who earlier in the month moved from Glasgow City.

With almost all of last season’s squad already committed for the new season, David Haley will have a strong squad to mount a real challenge.

Sarah Ewens, fresh from winning a Scottish Cup medal with Hibernian in November, is very much looking forward to teaming up with some old friends.

She told to the official Celtic website: “I played with Kelly Clark in Scotland U17 and U19 squads, so I’ve known her for a long time.

“At Spartans I played regularly with Kerry Montgomery, and I think we played well together, so I’m looking forward to linking up with Kerry again. Heather Richards, too, was a team- mate when she played for Hibs.”

And talking of her decision to move to the Hoops, Sarah said: “Celtic Women’s team has constantly been on the ‘up’ over the past two seasons and is getting better all the time. They have some great players, and I think I’ll fit in well. I hope the team will push on again this coming season and I hope we can win the league title sometime soon.

“And I’m looking forward to watching Brendan Rodgers’ team here at Celtic Park, too. It’s a wonderful stadium – the best in the country.”

David Haley said: “We are happy to have secured another top player.  I’ve seen Sarah play and score against us on many occasions so it will be good to have her on our side this season.

“Bringing in Sarah means we have more options in the striker area and will allow us to have variety in our shape and personnel. I’m looking forward to working with her in what I’m sure will be a successful upcoming season.”

And Hoops captain Kelly Clark added:  “It’s great to have another top player in. I’ve been on the receiving end of quite a few impressive goals from Sarah so it’s nice to know that won’t happen again.

“I’m sure she’ll fit in well with the team on and off the pitch and it’s great that she has the same ambitions as the rest of the squad.”
