Showdown Sundays – how the senior pyramid season climax looks with two weekends to go
While Renfrew Ladies have secured the Barclays Championship title and Giffnock SC have wrapped up SWFL South, the other SWFL senior pyramid leagues are very much still in the balance.
Barclays Scottish Women’s League One is heading for the wire, with two teams still in with a chance of winning the title and automatic promotion to the Barclays Championship. Leaders Elgin City managed only a draw at Cambusdoon on Sunday but will have been relieved to see nearest challengers St Mirren lose 3-0 against Dunipace to extend their at the top to three points. The sides face each other on Sunday in Elgin for a massive six-pointer that could decide the destination of the trophy.
Being at home and with a +30 goal difference to St Mirren’s +21, the advantage is with the Moray side, but both sides face a tricky final day against Queen of the South and Cambusdoon respectively.
Dunipace in third have kept their play-off dreams alive with their Paisley win, and will be hoping St Mirren lose both remaining games to nick a runners-up spot.
In SWFL North, with the top three separated by only a single point, Arbroath can secure the title on Sunday with an away win against third-placed Huntly as second-placed Grampian have played a game more. However, a Huntly win would put them top and needing either an away win on the final day v Blairgowrie or hope Arbroath drop points against Jeanfield Swifts.
Grampian would need to win on Sunday against Blairgowrie and hope for a draw in Huntly, then hope both Arbroath and Huntly lose on the final day.
In SWFL East, It’s in Edinburgh South’s hands as they lead with a two-point gap and are away to Loanhead miners then host Murieston United on the final day, while Edinburgh Uni Thistle visit HCF Community then host Loanhead hoping for South to slip up..
Currently three points ahead, Bishopton have one hand on the SWFL Central/West trophy already, and with challengers Cumbernauld United having played a game more, a point on Sunday at Gleniffer Thistle would be enough to secure the title.
United finish on Sunday with a derby against Cumbernauld Colts, but even if they win and Bishopton lose, they would need to wait to see if Bishopton followed up with a loss on the final day against Linlithgow Rose before knowing their fate.
