#SWFL1 South: Cumbernauld Colts v Boroughmuir Thistle

Cumbernauld produced a five star performance in their first game back after the mid-season break with a 5-0 home win. It was an away home win as Cumbernauld’s natural home park, Broadwood Stadium, was unavailable to them.

For all their early possession, it took until the half hour for Cumbernauld to open the scoring.

Fern took the ball in the middle of the Boroughmuir half and fed Wardlaw wide on the right. Wardlaw drove at the left back and produced a cross of quality that the Boroughmuir keeper spilled at the feet of Morrison who stroked the ball home.Cumbernauld Colts Line up v Boroughmuir Thistle

The home side then doubled their advantage three minutes later. An exquisite through ball from Emma McIntyre to Sarah Wardlaw who chipped the out rushing keeper.

Into the break the Colts went with a two goal advantage confident they’d see the job through in the second half and come away with the three points.

The third came from a quick throw down the right. Wardlaw played in Melissa Porter who’d run in the back of the visitors defence and sprinted into the box where she drove her cross into the heart of the six yard box. Kim Guthrie tapped home to put the game out of sight.

A fourth came for Porter just after the hour mark. She rose highest to nod home a Fern corner from the right.

The fifth and final goal came from captain Nicole Hutchison with four minutes left. Again it came from a Fern corner and Porter header. Hutchison picking up the scraps and forced the ball home from inside the 6 yard area.

After the match manager Julie McSherry, who had to deputise in goal for the injured Angela McGann and the unavailable Lisa McPhee said, “We were very comfortable today and controlled the tempo, style and flow of the game even though we were without some influential players due to injury, illness and holidays.

I was especially proud of how the girls adapted to a different formation I asked them to play. It’s difficult to single out any one player for significant praise as they were all phenomenal fro me. That said, we could still do with another couple of bodies in to fill the squad and would encourage anyone to get in touch if they feel they can enhance the side”
