Aberdeen took their tally for the season to nineteen goals in three games as they continued their impressive start to the campaign with a 5-0 victory away to Westdyke Ladies at Westhill.

The Dons didn’t take long to warm up in the chilly conditions as they took the lead after just four minutes. Chloe Gover had already had a shot from distance go wide in the opening minute and when given a second chance she gave the away-side the lead.

Kelly Forrest played a long pass forward on the right to find Johan Fraser running into in space. Fraser took the ball into the penalty area before squaring to Gover who had made a supporting run and found herself right in front of goal to calmly knock in the opener.

Aberdeen’s quick start continued as their opponents struggled to cope with the waves of early pressure and it was 2-0 after just ten minutes. Some great play on the right by Eilidh Shore saw her evade two defenders before earning herself some space to cross. Shore then played in a perfectly measured cross to Amy Phillips who made no mistake with her finish to put the Dons two in-front.

Westdyke looked like they might crumble after the fast start of the visitors but they managed to steady the ship somewhat, despite continued Aberdeen possession. Shore was a constant threat to the home side as she set up chances for Gover and Fraser before herself having a long-range shot saved.

Westdyke were reduced to trying to counter-attack but Natasha Bruce in midfield was on hand to win back possession a number of times and on the rare occasion that Westdyke managed to get forward, Forrest and Carrie Doig were on hand to mop-up at the back.

The first half came to a close with the Dons dominating possession but unable to get a third goal. Gover came closest, drawing a good save from the Westdyke keeper after a good work by Shore and Phillips had created the chance.

Aberdeen’s dominance continued at the start of the second half but their opponents restricted them to shots from distance in the early stages of the second period. When they finally did add a third in the 62nd minute, the goal came from a long range effort.

The Dons were awarded a free-kick for a foul, around 25-yards from the Westdyke goal.

Chloe Gover stood over the free-kick and with players up from the back, it looked like she was going to play it into the penalty area. Gover had others ideas though as she sent a curling effort straight into the top left-hand corner for her second, and the Dons third, of the match.

It wasn’t long before the Reds made it four as they scored again just four minutes later.

Shore was again involved as she played a neat pass to Phillips who showed great composure as she finished off the chance to complete her double.

Westdyke fought hard to keep the score down and to try and create something going forward but the away-side added some gloss with a fifth goal in the 70th minute. Fraser forced a foul after a good run down the right and Shore came across to take the free-kick.

Shore’s cross into the penalty area caused confusion in the Westdyke defence and Doig was lurking at the back post to force the ball over the line and complete scoring. The Dons threatened to add to their tally in the closing stages as Loren Campbell moved from left-back to right-wing and caused Westdyke a real headache at the back. The home-side saw the
game out without taking any further damage as the Dons continued their positive start to the season.
