Four all SWPL ties in SSE Scottish Women’s Cup as Glasgow City face tough test away to Forfar Farmington
The SSE Scottish Women’s Cup 2nd Round draw was conducted this afternoon at the Firhill Stadium. This is the round where Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) sides are entered for the first time and the draw has thrown up four all SWPL ties.
Perhaps the match of the round will be Forfar Farmington hosting Glasgow City, the eight time champions. Forfar are currently fourth in the Scottish Building Society SWPL 1 with Glasgow City top of the table. The two sides met earlier this year with City slightly fortunate to come away with a 1-0 win at home.
There is one other all SWPL 1 match with Hamilton Academical at home to Rangers. Hamilton, who climbed off the foot of the table on Sunday, are three points behind Rangers who are fifth in the league.
Stirling University in SWPL 1 host second placed FC Kilmarnock of SWPL 2 and Glasgow Girls and Hearts, both in SWPL 2, meet at this stage. The reigning champions, Hibernian, are away to Thistle Weir of the Scottish Women’s Football League Division 1 South.
The draw was held at Firhill Stadium, which was also announced as the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup Final venue to be held on Sunday 4th of November.
Speaking after the draw, SWF Interim Executive Officer, Lorna Cameron, said, “We’re delighted to be hosting the final here at Firhill. We’ve been working closely with Partick Thistle and they’ve been fantastic. They really support what Scottish Women’s Football is all about, so it’s a brilliant fit all round.”
“We had just over 1,300 in attendance at the last final. We’re hopeful that we can exceed this again this year with the help of SSE. We’ve got a venue that’s in a great location with lots of transportation links and by announcing the details early, we’re on track to make this an amazing spectacle for all involved in the game.”
Ties are to be played on Sunday 17th June with the 3nd Round draw being conducted the week commencing 18th June.
