SWF visit Dryburgh Athletic to see free breakfasts in school holidays programme

Scottish Women’s Football CEO Aileen Campbell has visited Dryburgh Athletic Community Club to hear about the club’s initiative to provide free breakfasts during the school holidays, supported by DropShop and the Dundee Bairns charity.

Dundee Bairns, which also supports free breakfasts in primary schools across the city, was set up with an aim to alleviate holiday hunger and ensure that no child in Dundee should go hungry.

Dryburgh have linked with the charity to provide breakfasts alongside the club’s summer football camps and summer sessions.

Speaking after the visit, Aileen Campbell said: “So many of our clubs play a vital role in their communities, and Dryburgh’s summer programme is a great example. I spoke to so many young people who are proud to be a part of this community club.

“The breakfast club is an inspiration, and shows the power that football can have to link with and support the communities clubs are in, especially during a cost of living crisis. The fact first team Championship players were amongst those volunteering shows a fantastic ethos at the club.”

Club Development Officer Sarah Smith said: “It was great to have Aileen along to help with the breakfast club, and I know the children appreciated the opportunity to speak and tell jokes to the head of Scottish Women’s Football.

“At Dryburgh Athletic we take our community role very seriously indeed, and we are proud of the way our entire pathways feel part of that and benefit from it too. Our breakfast club runs at Lochee Park before our summer camps, ensuring no children are turning up hungry. Who knows, some of these children may end up turning out for our senior teams in the future!”
