SWF Statement on Edinburgh City FC
Edinburgh City FC has today (20th December) confirmed to SWF the club’s decision to withdraw Edinburgh City Women’s FC from the Championship and that the women’s team has effectively disbanded.
SWF are incredibly disappointed with this decision which stems from challenges within the wider club and which has left little chance to explore options for the team to continue.
The Championship and League One League Management Committee (LMC) will be considering this matter and the implications for the League and the League Cup. SWF will immediately null and void all Edinburgh City’s league results and will communicate to clubs regarding decisions about the League Cup once the LMC has met.
Any team withdrawing from a league at this point in the calendar is a source of real regret and illustrates the need for sustainability and resilience within clubs to compete and participate well within structured football competition. SWF also recognise that news of the effective end of the Edinburgh City Women’s team will come as a devastating blow to the committed players in the squad. SWF has reached out to the players via the squad captain and stand ready to support them as best we can to ensure that no woman is lost to football. SWF have been in contact with Edinburgh City and are reassured that the club recognise the gravity of this situation and are pleased that they have offered support to players impacted by the decision through their chaplaincy service.
SWF will continue to engage with Edinburgh City going forward.
