Scotland’s top two women’s teams will battle it out for the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup on Sunday the 6th of November at the Superseal Stadium, Hamilton. History makers Glasgow City FC, who claimed a Scottish record 10 league titles in a row, will take on SWPL Cup 2016 champions and league runners-up, Hibernian Ladies.
It will also be the first final since SSE became the title sponsor of the cup and the first time in its history that prize money will be presented to the winners, with a prize money pot to be extended to the earlier rounds next season.
John Stewart, SSE Director of Human Resources, said:
“SSE is incredibly proud to support women’s football and be an integral part of the huge progress the game is making. We are also delighted that Under-17 Scotland star and SSE Next Gen athlete Elena Santoyo-Brown will present The SSE Scottish Women’s Cup trophy at the Final, a reward for the commitment the young footballer has shown to women’s football over the past 12 months. Elena’s role is another first for the competition and will hopefully inspire the thousands of girls watching around the country to become involved in the game”.
Aileen Campbell, Minister for Public Health and Sport, who will also be part of the presentation party, said:
“I’m honoured to be attending this inaugural SSE Scottish Women’s Cup Final and presenting the medals.
“It promises to be a fantastic occasion as the top two women’s teams in Scotland compete. Glasgow City – fresh from their Scottish record ten titles in a row – take on the league runners-up, Hibernian Ladies. I encourage fans of all ages to turn up in numbers to savour a great atmosphere.
“The Scottish Government is determined to promote attendance at and participation in women’s football. Following the launch of the SWPL and our national team’s successful qualification for the European Championships, the game is in great shape and interest is growing. This final promises to build on this success and underline the strength of the game in this country.”
This will also be a huge match for both sides as they aim to collect their second piece of domestic silverware this season. Having defeated Hibernian in the league three times and with vast experience in cup finals, Glasgow City will be firm favourites to claim their sixth Scottish Women’s Cup in a row.
However, Hibernian will be buoyed by the fact they defeated Glasgow City in the most recent cup final, clinching the SWPL Cup 2-1 thanks to a late winner. It was an epic encounter at Ainslie Park back in June, and while both sides will differ on their desired outcome for this match, neutrals to the women’s game will be hoping for more of the same.
The game also targets to be one of the most viewed SWF games ever. With a large attendance expected at Hamilton for the match, partly down to the ‘Adults Go Free’ offer, and with it being broadcast live on BBC Alba. The SWF initiative will see adults go free for every paying child of £5, with the aim of encouraging families to enjoy and return to women’s football in the future.
