Glasgow City continued where they left off against Hibs last week, with an impressive 7-0 win over Rangers at the Excelsior Stadium.
The game was also a momentous occasion for Glasgow City Captain Leanne Ross as she equalled Suzanne Lappin’s all time scoring record for the club when she netted her 231st goal in City colours on 61 minutes.
City got off and running in the 10th minute when a Fiona Brown rocket was palmed away by Megan Brothwick in the Rangers nets, only for Julie Fleeting to fire in the rebound.
It was a debut for Brothwick in Rangers colours, coming up from English side Durham and the keeper had a busy match for her first Gers appearance.
Rangers dealt poorly with a City corner on 13 minutes and City defender Cheryl McCulloch made the visitors pay the price, when she netted from close range for her side’s second of the game. Goal number three followed ten minutes later as Clare Shine expertly headed a Ross cross into the back of the net.
Ross was involved again for her side’s fourth, crossing for Fleeting who cleverly headed the ball back across goal to Erin Cuthbert and the City midfielder made no mistake to net her 15th goal of the season.
Fleeting thought she had scored again on 36 minutes, but the referee ruled the ball had gone over the goal line before Fiona Brown crossed for Fleeting and the goal was chopped off.
Goal number five for City and Ross’s 231st, came from a set piece, an area where Ross has been so deadly her entire career. After a foul on Brown 20 yards from goal, Ross stepped up and fired the ball past the wall and into the bottom corner.
Fleeting netted her second of the match after being set up by second half substitute Haley Rosen and Rosen was provider once more in the dying minutes, this time combining well with Hayley Lauder, for Lauder to cleverly beat Brothwick in the far bottom corner to make it Glasgow City 7-0 Rangers.
The win keeps City five points clear at the top of the SWPL with seven games remaining.
Glasgow City are back in action next Sunday as they take on Stirling University away from home.
