Stenny Ladies progress into the second round of the 2016 SWF Scottish Cup after a comfortable victory at Scotstoun.
The game was always going to be a challenge due to only 11 fit players travelling, however the 11 that endured the 90 minutes set a very high standard.
Stenny Ladies opened the scoring seconds before half time. After 20 unsuccessful attempts on goal, a free kick from Dickson broke to McLeman 25 yards from goal. McLeman unleashed a rocket of a shot that flew past the helpless Makwakwa in the UGFC goal.
HALF TIME: UGFC 0-1 SLFC
Stenny Ladies started the second half the way they finished the first, with some last ditch defending stopping a second goal.
After 65 minutes Cherry should’ve doubled the lead when she was through with only the ‘keeper to beat. Unfortunately, her shot found the ‘keeper rather than the net.
Only 8 minutes later, Cherry got her goal. A corner from Wilson found Hunt on the edge of the box. Her shot fell at Cherry’s feet who, with time and space, turned and placed her shot through a defenders legs and into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.
United Glasgow were given a lifeline after 81 minutes when Falconer handled the ball inside her own box. The referee initially gave a corner kick however she changed her mind and pointed to the spot. Emma Porteous stepped up to take it but Henny made a good save with Mowat clearing for a corner.
From the resulting corner, UGFC got their goal! A great delivery was met by a well timed run and finish (goal scorer unknown).
It was a nervy final 10 minutes for Stenny Ladies. But despite the 5 minutes added time at the end Stenny held on.
Stenny Ladies next match is against East Kilbride Girls on Sunday 15 May at Ochilview Park (4pm kick off).
