SSE Scottish Women’s Cup semi-finals: Local derbies await SWPL sides

This Sunday 16th October will see two local derbies at Ainslie Park, Edinburgh, as four teams battle out for their place in the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup final. Heart of Midlothian face Hibernian in the 12:00 kick-off and Glasgow Girls play Glasgow City in the 15:00 kick-off.

It’s the first set of Scottish Cup matches since it was announced that SSE was to become the first major sponsor of women’s football in Scotland. As part of that agreement, which will provide investment across the women’s game, the Perth based energy company has become an official partner of the Scotland Women’s National Team and title sponsor of the newly re-branded SSE Scottish Women’s Cup.

The four sides will be battling for a place at the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup Final at The Superseal Stadium, Hamilton, on Sunday 6th November, which will be broadcast live on BBC Alba.

Benefits will include, for the first time, prize money for the 2016 SSE Scottish Women’s Cup winners and runners-up, with a prize money pot to be extended to earlier rounds from next season.

Both games will see SWPL 1 and 2 sides go head-to-head, adding an extra dynamic to the local derbies. Both Glasgow Girls and Heart of Midlothian will be hoping to make their opponents regular fixtures next season as they both battle for promotion but will know how big a test this Sunday will be. As for Glasgow City and Hibernian, they’ll be looking to avoid any cup shocks and to set up a rematch of the SWPL Cup Final from earlier in the season.
