2019 Scottish Building Society SWPL 1 Fixtures Announced

The fixtures for the 2019 Scottish Building Society Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) season have been announced and it looks set to be another exciting and competitive year of top-flight football. With eight teams in the division, each side will play each other three times to complete the 21-match league calendar.

This year’s domestic club season has been extended slightly to account for significant international activity – most notably following the Scottish Women’s National Team’s historic qualification for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. Scottish Women’s Football’s (SWF) Executive Officer, Fiona McIntyre, commented, ‘It has been a particularly challenging year to create a domestic fixture calendar that meets the needs of our senior clubs but is reflective of the additional demands created by our successful national teams at both senior and youth level. All of the challenges reflect the progress women’s football has made in Scotland, with 2 clubs qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Champions League as well as Scottish National Teams competing in major competitions’

The first set of fixtures, to be played on Sunday 10th February, have already thrown up a number of intriguing games. Newly promoted Motherwell will host Stirling University with a resurgent Celtic, under Eddie Wolecki Black, hosting Forfar Farmington who will also be under new management following the departure of Mark Nisbet.

The top two from last year, who will also compete in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, face tough tests away from home on the opening day of the season. Reigning champions Glasgow City face a Rangers side buoyed by the recent announcement of increased investment from the club whilst last year’s runners up, Hibernian face local rivals Spartans.

Based on last year, Glasgow City and Hibs will continue to be huge games in terms of the title landscape. They’ll first face off on Sunday 31st March and their final fixture falls on Sunday 27th October.
