Glasgow City got season 2018 underway in style with a 6-0 win over Stirling University at Petershill Park to ensure a perfect start to the defence of their League title.
Last season’s top goalscorer, Abbi Grant, finished where she left off as she opened her account after only 6 minutes on the clock. A great ball from new signing Kirsty Howat found Grant and the forward ran through on goal before finishing past Chloe Logan in nets for Stirling.
On 14 minutes it was 2-0. Full back Nicola Docherty found Grant who cut the ball back from the goal line to Jo Love. The City midfielder and Scotland international then made no mistake side footing home from the middle of the penalty area.
Hayley Lauder made it 3-0 before the break, with a carbon copy of Love’s goal. Grant once again made it to the by-line, before pulling it back to Lauder, who similar to Love, side footed past Logan from ten yards out.
City continued to dominate the ball in the second period against a well organised, defensive minded Stirling side. However, the visitors could not hold out and on 85 minutes Docherty ran into the box and fired into the net to make it 4-0. The floodgates then well and truly opened and just before the 90th minute, Megan Foley headed home at the back post. One minute into stoppage time, Joanne Paton scored the goal of the day as she rifled a 25 yard strike into the back of the net to make the final score 6-0 to City.
Head Coach Scott Booth was happy with his side’s start to the defence of the League title. He said, “It was good to get off to a winning start in the League where we have managed to score six goals and keep a clean sheet. I thought we played some really good football at times today and we will be working hard to continue to build on that performance next week at home to Hamilton.”
City are back in action 14:10 at Petershill Park, Sunday 18th February against Hamilton Accies. Entry is £5 adult, £2 U’16s.
