Scottish Women’s Football changed to a summer season in 2009, and the new 2018 season begins this Sunday. For Celtic this means a home fixture against Rangers in the Scottish Building Society Scottish Women’s Premier League.
The squad has been in pre-season training for several weeks now and have six new signings in their ranks. Manager David Haley is looking forward to the months ahead and is confident the team can make its mark.
He said: “We haven’t set any targets really at the moment. It’s more about the games that we play and making sure that we are 100 per cent focused for every game and not just the so-called big games.
“We must find the consistency we need to be successful. We know we can’t play really well in every game but we must find a way to win if we are to be successful this season.
“As far as the players are concerned, the target for them is to just make sure they play and work hard for every game. They mustn’t let standards slip at any point in games or in training.
“Our new signings have been great so far. Players like Rachel Donaldson and Nicole Pullar bring pace and power to our team that we may not have had before.
“Keeva Keenan and Claire Crosbie coming in brings solidity to the defence as this was an area we had to strengthen given the goals we conceded last season.
“Colette Cavanagh and Claire Adams will bring some creativity and some guile so I’m looking forward to working with them all.”
The season begins with three successive home games and the manager added: “We are only focusing on the first game and that is against Rangers. Once that game is done then we will focus on Stirling University but all our attention is on Rangers at the moment.”
With the men playing on Saturday, Sunday would be an ideal time for Celtic fans to show their support for the women’s team. It’s pay at the gate, and K-Park Training Academy is an excellent venue to enjoy the football.
