Recoveries keep Championship tight at the top

Rossvale, Ayr United and Hutchison Vale recovered from opening day defeats to keep the eight-team Women’s Championship an extremely tight contest.

Meanwhile it was goals galore on day two of the Women’s League One, highlighting how entertaining the season in the new competition will be.

Hutchison Vale had lost to Renfrew on the opening day and found themselves 3-1 down to a marauding Inverness Caley Thistle in Wester Hailes, but dug deep to take all three points with a 4-3 victory. Rossvale, who lost in Inverness last week, put four beyond a Morton side who had won comfortably last Sunday. And Ayr United, who had been on the receipt of that humiliation on day one, rallied at home to defeat a strong Dryburgh Athletic side 2-1. Renfrew Ladies came from two goals down to almost secure a point against Livingston in front of 241 spectators at the Tony Macaroni, but a late winner by Mulligan kept all three points in West Lothian.

In League One, FC Edinburgh won a convincing 6-0 victory over BSC Glasgow, whilst there were also five goals scored by Stenhousemuir at home to Dundee West and Giffnock SC at Gleniffer Thistle, both games ending 5-1. Stenny’s Eva Ralston scored an impressive two goals within a minute at Ochilview, leaving Dundee West with a mountain to climb. Nearby rivals Falkirk beat Edinburgh Caledonia 2-0 at the Falkirk stadium.

Grampian Ladies racked up an incredible 8-0 victory against Airdrie Ladies, while St Mirren mounted a spirited comeback in their match against Grampian’s Northeast rivals Westdyke, but the home side held on and remain in touch with the top of the division with a 3-2 victory.
