Nairn set for historic Sutherland v Shetland women’s football cup final
Station Park in Nairn will host the 2025 ScottishPower Highlands and Islands League Cup Final in what will be a historic occasion whatever the outcome.
Football fans are invited to join 2021 winners Sutherland Women and Shetland Women as they contest the final at 14:30 on Sunday 14 September.
Sutherland beat Orkney in August to return to the final, while Shetland marked a remarkable debut appearance in SWF senior football with a victory over 2023 finalists Caithness to reach their first final.
It is the first final with ScottishPower as title sponsor of the cup.
Ahead of the final, Sutherland skipper Bethany Sutherland said: “We are really excited as a club to be playing in our fourth Highlands and Islands League Cup Final and it’s an honour to be captaining the side again. We are looking forward to playing against Shetland as they’re a team we’ve never played before so it makes it more exciting, the unknown!”
Shetland captain Rhea Nicolson said: “We entered this competition as an unknown, our main priority was to get games against female opposition before the Island Games as we don’t get that opportunity at home. Reaching the Final is a massive achievement and I want us to take this moment in and enjoy it.”
Tickets for the final are just £6 and include the earlier 9v9 Youth Final which kicks off at 10:30 ahead of the big game. This will see Ross County’s two under-14 teams face each other for silverware.
Commenting ahead of both finals, SWF CEO Aileen Campbell said: “Station Park has been a fantastic venue for our Highlands and Islands League Cup Final, with a warm welcome and good atmosphere for both the senior showpiece and the Under 14s 9v9 final.
“This year is particularly special, as it is the first since our Principal Partner ScottishPower added the league cup to its title sponsorship of the Highlands and Islands League.
“It is also the first time Shetland has participated in a Scottish Women’s Football senior competition, and whoever wins they deserve enormous credit for reaching the final on their maiden voyage.
“Sutherland won this cup in 2021, and have reached the final twice since, so we are set up for an entertaining final and I hope to see a good crowd for this historic occasion in women’s football.”
