Mother’s Day drama for Scottish women’s grassroots football

Hailstorms failed to dampen a dramatic Mother’s Day in Scottish Women’s Football competitions, as Forfar topped the Tayside-Angus derby and Falkirk were held by local rivals Stenhousemuir.

Former Dryburgh star Derrian Gollan came back to haunt her former club, scoring the opener for Forfar Farmington in a 3-0 victory which lifts the Angus side into the top half of the Barclays Championship with only two games until the league splits.

Championship leaders Falkirk were held to a dramatic 4-4 draw by Stenhousemuir at Ochilview, which allowed Renfrew to close the gap at the top to a single point with a 2-1 home win over Rossvale. The bottom two sides also picked up points, with Armadale Thistle beating Inverness Caledonian Thistle 2-1 in West Lothian and Morton levelling at Ayr United to take a 1-1 draw.

In Barclays League One, leaders Elgin City took maximum points from Dunfermline with a 4-0 win over the Pars, while St Mirren kept the pressure on with a 4-1 win against Westdyke in Aberdeenshire.

Queen of the South beat Airdrie CC 2-1 to remain ahead of the Buddies in third, also navigating a hailstorm which halted play for ten minutes. Glenrothes Strollers moved into sixth with a 6-1 victory against Edinburgh Caledonia at Meadowbank and Cambusdoon beat Inverurie Loco Works 4-1 at home.

Edinburgh South came out tops in the ScottishPower Regional League Cup quarter final Edinburgh derby, knocking out holders Edinburgh Uni Thistle with a 2-0 victory. South are joined in the draw by Arbroath, who beat Cumbernauld Colts 2-0, SWFL West leaders Bishopton, who won 3-1 against Thornton Hibs, and Huntly, who beat Stewarton Annick 2-1 in front of 173 fans.

In the ScottishPower Regional League Plate, the competition held for the SWFL sides who were eliminated in the group stages, Buckie Ladies, Penicuik Athletic, Jeanfield Swifts & Alloa Athletic are in the semi-final draw after beating Central Ladies, Benburb, Musselburgh Windsor and Ardrossan Winton Rovers respectively.
