Glasgow Girls double up on ScottishPower Youth Challenge Cup victories as 16s win

Glasgow Girls have lifted a second trophy on the same day after their 16s side beat Giffnock SC Black on the third ScottishPower Youth Challenge Cup Final of the day.

A lively 16s final was accompanied by drummers in both sets of fans to give the final game at Ochilview’s super Sunday an edge.

After five minutes, a Giffnock player was tripped on the edge of the box. Sarah Stewart sent in a curling free kick, but Jess Lothian in the Glasgow goals got down well to deny her. At the other end, a great turn from Oluwadara Ositelu cleared her defender but her stinging shot went just wide.

An intense midfield battle ensued between the sides. Anna Steele held off two defenders brilliantly but shot just wide on 23 minutes, before Phoebe Stewart in the Giffnock goal denied Brooke Wilson at the other end.

But Scotland capped Osiltelu opened the scoring in the last moments of the half, nodding down to break on the left and tucking a neat finish in at the near post.

Glasgow almost added a second early in the second half, another great nod down by Ositelu finding Elisha Duff who struck a good finish only to see Stewart dive to her right and hold. Stewart did well moments later to deny Brooke Wilson, who had latched onto a long ball over the top.

A second did come in the 63rd minute, Stewart again doing brilliantly to save from a Osiltelu shot but she could only spill the ball into the path of Isla Leahy who made no mistake to double the lead.

Giffnock worked hard to come back into the match but Glasgow Girls continued to look dangerous on the break and were perhaps unlucky not to add a late goal.

The club will be proud that they lifted two cups on the same day.
