Championship and League One Cup ‘big opportunity’ for aspirational clubs
Dryburgh Athletic and FC Edinburgh have spoken about the opportunities presented by the Championship and League One, ahead of the competition’s final on Sunday.
Dundee side Dryburgh Athletic are the cup holders, and captain Laura Boag has told SWF that retaining the trophy is an opportunity to be remembered.
FC Edinburgh manager Andy Enwood, meanwhile, whose side sit top of the Women’s League One, has spoken of the club’s aspirations to climb the leagues and prove they can compete at the highest level.
The sides face each other at 2pm this Sunday at the Indodrill Stadium in Alloa.
In a series of interviews posted by SWF, Laura Boag said: “Regardless of what level you are playing at, it’s a massive achievement if you can go and retain a cup. So there’s a big opportunity there for people to remember this team, this club, for doing really great things. That will be the motivation.”
Andy Enwood said: “We want to be in the Championship next year, and as I’ve continually said to the players if we have ambitions to play in the Championship next year and do well in that league then here’s an opportunity in this cup competition to play against Championship teams and beat them. So far we’ve done that twice and obviously we’re going to try and do that a third time.”
On their way to the final, FC Edinburgh have beaten Championship sides Morton and Ayr United, the latter in a thrilling semi-final in Airdrie. In the other semi-final, Dryburgh defied their lowly league position by beating Glasgow side Rossvale, who are second in the Championship table.
Dryburgh head coach Owen Mackenzie said: “The way our season has gone, we’ve dominated large spells with the ball and just not created opportunities and in that game we created and took the opportunities… at the end of the day we’ll go out and play the way we want to play.”
FC Edinburgh captain Danielle Forsyth said they would approach the final like any other game.
She said: “We don’t feel the pressure at all. We put in 100 per cent effort every single time. We’ll just go again, cup final.”
