Glasgow Women promoted in thrilling final day for SWPL

Glasgow Girls and Women FC have been promoted to the SWPL 1 on a thrilling final day of the Park’s Motor Group SWPL season.

The East End club will become the fifth Glasgow team in the top flight next season after beating Boroughmuir Thistle 3-1 at home.

Goals for Glasgow Women came from Lucy Ronald, Mhairi Lyle and a penalty by Kaitlyn Canavan, while Novoa Torrente scored for Boroughmuir.

Speaking on the club’s social media channels, manager Craig Joyce said: “I’m delighted for everyone involved in the club. We weren’t supposed to be here, but we are here, and we went one step further. I’m absolutely delighted.”

Elsewhere, Park’s Motor Group SWPL2 Champions Dundee United won 5-1 at Queen’s Park, Kilmarnock beat Stirling University 4-0 in Stirling which lifted them into fourth in the table above St Johnstone on the final day, for Manager Andy Gardner’s last game in charge.

In SWPL1, a double from Jane Ross helped Champions Rangers to a 3-1 win at rivals Celtic, meaning they finish the season undefeated.

Glasgow City were held by fourth-placed Hibs, Hearts beat Partick Thistle 3-0 to leapfrog them in the table, a stoppage time winner from Kaela McDonald-Nguah gave Motherwell a 3-2 win against Aberdeen, and Spartans beat bottom side Hamilton 2-1 with a goal from captain Alana Marshall in her 200th appearance for the club, the first since she spoke publicly about her MS diagnosis.

With the Championship season also over, all eyes now turn to the Biffa Scottish Women’s Cup final on Sunday 29th May at Tynecastle Park, where Celtic face holders Glasgow City.
