The Gers edged to a 1-0 win over Spartans on Sunday, with Jade Gallon’s second half goal being enough to give the side their third league win of the season, which lifts them up to fourth in the SWPL.

The victory gives Rangers 10 points in the league and moves them to within three points of Hibernian and Celtic.

McDonald gave goalscorer Gallon personal credit for her big role in the win but also for leading the fightback against Motherwell on Wednesday evening, when the Light Blues battled back from 3-0 down to draw.

She said: “Jade Gallon’s performance both defensively and to be able to get us the goal was brilliant, she helped the team on Wednesday night and really helped the team today too.

“Every three points is important. It’s such a tight league, competitive matches all the time. This result puts us back in the mix.

“I thought the first half was extremely tight, a point probably would have been a fair reflection.”

Despite an impressive fightback on Wednesday evening, which saw her side hit three inside the final five minutes, to grab a 3-3 draw at Motherwell, McDonald wasn’t impressed by what she saw.

She had demanded a committed 90 minute display on return to action against Spartans and felt her team responded in tough conditions.

McDonald said: “The wind seemed to pick up from nowhere and at that point we really struggled to get out. Obviously, Spartans put us under a bit of pressure, but the players never gave up

“In the second half, I felt everything we asked the players to do at half time we really brought to life and we were deserving of the goal.”

Next up for the Gers is the rearranged home match against the so far unstoppable Glasgow City, who beat Rangers 5-1 in the SWPL Cup semis last weekend.

McDonald thinks her team need to produce their best and be ready for an intense battle if they are to get something from the game.

She explained: “We obviously have that game in hand against Glasgow City, we know that will be a tough ask.

“It’s important that the team show real grit, determination and focus. We have shown it twice now, but we need to show it more often.

“We need to go into the game with confidence and with a battling mentality. We need to go in wanting to do better than we did in the semi-final against them. We need to be able to go give a good account of ourselves.”
