The third and fourth tier of women’s football in Scotland are set for a thrilling climax, with promotion slots still being contested in the SWF Championship and League One.

The Championship has split into a top four and bottom five, and Glasgow club Rossvale sit in pole position for automatic promotion to the SWPL2, only needing a point from their remaining three games to secure the Championship title. They host East Fife at Petershill on Sunday 7th April, before visiting second placed Ayr United then Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

East Fife themselves will be hoping to catch Ayr United for the play-off spot, and they travel to Ayrshire on the 28th April in what could be an epic conclusion to both clubs’ season.

The bottom five will then have an additional week of fixtures to catch up their games with current fifth-placed Renfrew Ladies travelling to Aberdeenshire to face Westdyke on the final day.

SWF League One is set for an unbelievable title contest, with only six points currently separating the three teams at the top of the table. With five teams in each half, leaders Stenhousemuir will sit out the 7th April to watch second-placed Forfar Farmington travel to Bonnyrigg Rose and third-placed Falkirk host Edinburgh Caledonia, who just made the top five with a 6-1 victory against Dundee West last night.

With three promotion places to the Championship at stake due to Edinburgh City’s decision to fold its double-winning team mid-season, Bonnyrigg Rose will have an eye on closing the six-point gap to third. The Rosie Posey follow up their match against Forfar by hosting Stenny on the 14th April.

Stenhousemuir then host Forfar Farmington on the 28th followed by a local derby against Falkirk on the 5th of May, before concluding the campaign at Meadowbank against Edinburgh Caledonia.

Queen of the South, who only narrowly missed out on a top five place after last night’s result, also sit out the round on 7th April before visiting Giffnock on the 14th.  Airdrie Ladies sit ten points behind in seventh and visit Giffnock Soccer Centre themselves in their first post-split match, while St Mirren host Dundee West.

Fixtures for April 7th:

Championship:

Rossvale vs East Fife

Inverness Caledonian Thistle vs Ayr United

Renfrew Ladies vs Dryburgh Athletic

Hutchison Vale vs Westdyke

League One:

Bonnyrigg Rose vs Forfar Farmington

Falkirk vs Edinburgh Caledonia

Giffnock SC vs Airdrie Ladies

A number of teams withdrew from senior leagues this season, and while this is not new in women’s football it is clear that a period of stability is needed so that the best teams at the most sustainable clubs are given the opportunity to move up the pyramid, and that disruptive mid-season withdrawals become a thing of the past.

The need for stability was echoed by the clubs at an Emergency General Meeting of SWF clubs in the Championship and League One to work out practically how to minimise the disruption that teams withdrawing has on all leagues and the integrity of the game.

One automatic promotion and one play-off remains in place from the Championship into the SWPL.

At the start of the current season, clubs voted to grow the SWF Championship, Scottish Women’s Football’s top tier beneath the SWPL, to 12 teams for the 2024/25 season.

With one automatic promotion to the SWPL2 for the Championship winners and one play-off spot for the second-placed team, Edinburgh City’s decision to fold its double-winning women’s team means that there will be no relegation and the top three eligible teams in SWF League One will now be promoted to the Championship for the 2024/25 season.

Current League One rules state the club finishing 12th will be relegated, so with Grampian Ladies opting to play regional football before a ball was kicked and BSC Glasgow folding their women’s team mid-season, there is no 12th place and therefore there will also be no relegation from League One at the end of this season.

Clearly, regular relegation is a vital part of the football ecosystem, and must be in place from both SWF’s national leagues next season.

As previously outlined, the top eligible team in each of the four SWFL leagues will be given the opportunity to gain promotion to national football in League One. Four teams being promoted in this way is unprecedented.

In the SWFL, development teams of a club already placed in the national leagues of the women’s football pyramid remain ineligible for promotion, as the aim should be for these clubs to develop players that can break into their first team.

Clubs who are offered promotion from an SWFL league must therefore consider carefully if they have the additional resources to fulfil fixtures at a national level before accepting promotion. This includes squad size, finances to cover travel and increased visibility on social media to promote games in League One.

Applications for new teams to join the increasingly competitive SWFL will be considered based on the sustainability of a club to meet the challenges of regular competitive football, so we can all avoid regular forfeiting of games and disruptive withdrawals mid-season as we grow the game together.

A late winner by Ayr United denied Rossvale a title party in a day of drama for the SWF Championship.

In the last full round of fixtures before Scotland’s women’s third tier splits into a top four and bottom five, Rossvale comfortably beat Dryburgh Athletic 6-0 in the early kick off, but needed second-placed Ayr United to fail to win in their game against Renfrew Ladies to clinch the title and automatic promotion to the SWPL.

Renfrew Ladies, who were looking to secure their own place in the top four, went ahead early through Michaela Brown and Ayr looked spooked, missing a penalty in the 24th minute to go in at the break behind.

Ayr came out fighting in the second half, however. Skipper Jodie Barbour laying off to Louise Cameron to score an equaliser in the 70th minute before Lauren McBlain’s late volley secured three points and mean Ayr remain four points ahead in that all-important playoff spot from East Fife, who beat Morton 6-0.

Renfrew’s loss meant Inverness Caledonian Thistle claimed a place in the top four with a comfortable 12-1 victory over bottom side Hutchison Vale, which included hat-tricks for Rhea Hossack, Iona MacArthur and Ellie Anderson.

The top three in SWF League One all won, with leaders Stenhousemuir beating Edinburgh Caledonia 4-0 at home and Forfar Farmington running out 7-1 victors against Dundee West. Third placed Falkirk beat Queen of the South 3-0, but the Donnhammers remain fifth ahead of Edinburgh Caledonia. The capital side must win their game in hand against Dundee West to take Queens’ place in the top five.

Elsewhere, Giffnock Soccer Centre found themselves 3-0 up against Airdrie Ladies in under 20 minutes, but the diamonds fought back to level the game with around twenty minutes to go. Returning from a long absence through injury, Nicole Ritchie popped up for Giffnock in injury time and scored the winner in what is a big win for the struggling Eastwood side.

In the ScottishPower Highlands and Islands league, Sutherland have gone top after beating Clachnacuddin 5-0 at home. Rivals Caithness were beaten 4-2 by Ross County, while last season’s double winners Buckie Ladies got back to winning ways with a 5-0 victory over Ross and Cromarty.

SWF’s national leagues head into their final full round this weekend before each league splits for the season finale.

The Championship will split into a top four and bottom five, with Glasgow side Rossvale currently eight points ahead of second-placed Ayr United with four games left. This means if they win and Ayr United fail to win on Sunday, they will have clinched the title and automatic promotion to SWPL 2.

Rossvale host Dundee side Dryburgh Athletic on Sunday, who sit four points behind fourth-placed Renfrew so cannot make the top four but will see the match as a dress rehearsal for next month’s Championship & League One cup final in Alloa between the sides.

Ayr United host Renfrew Ladies on Sunday, who will be desperate to cement their top four credentials. A draw may not be enough for them, as fifth-placed Inverness Caledonian Thistle, two points behind, head to Edinburgh to face a Hutchison Vale side who have shipped goals in recent weeks, so it is difficult to predict eventual goal differences if the sides are tied on points.

Third-placed East Fife have secured their top four status, but will be looking to gain ground on Ayr United who sit in the playoff spot as they travel to face Morton, who sit in eighth.

SWF’s League One will split into a top five and bottom five, but the teams sitting in fifth and sixth are both currently on 28 points. League newcomers Queen of the South in fifth have a +17 goal difference and travel to third-placed Falkirk hoping that Edinburgh Caledonia, sitting just behind them with a +15 goal difference don’t get a result against league leaders Stenhousemuir.

The added complication is that Edinburgh Caledonia also have a rearranged game in hand against bottom side Dundee West, so a top five spot remains in the capital club’s hands.

Bonnyrigg Rose on 32 points have already secured their top five status, while Airdrie Ladies on 18 points cannot reach the top half.

Only six points separate the top three in League One, so every game will matter in the run-in. Whatever happens, we’re set for an exciting conclusion to Scotland’s third and fourth tiers.

Stenhousemuir have gone three points clear at the top of SWF League One thanks to an injury time winner from Samantha Montgomery at Station Park against Forfar Farmington.

The top-two clash began at a frenetic pace, an early goal from Stenhousemuir’s Josie Cawood being cancelled out by a penalty from Clair Hendry for the hosts to make it level at the break. Forfar had goalkeeper Katie White to thank for keeping out an Eva Ralston penalty, diving well to her right, before Lucia Martinez latched onto the rebound but saw her shot clear the bar.

With the referee checking his watch and the spoils looking to be shared, Montgomery drifted in to the left of the box and placed a shot past White to make it 2-1 before being mobbed by her celebrating teammates.

League One has one more full round before the division splits for the final four games. A flurry of second half goals gave Bonnyrigg Rose a 4-0 victory over Airdrie Ladies, while Edinburgh Caley saw off a challenge from Giffnock at home with a 4-2 win.

In the SWF Championship, second-placed Ayr United cut Rossvale’s lead at the top to eight points with a 4-2 victory over Dryburgh Athletic in Dundee. East Fife put 14 goals past Hutchison Vale in a 14-2 win at Bayview, while Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Westdyke played out a pulsating 4-4 draw in the Highlands. An injury-time goal from Renfrew Ladies striker Claire Rae clinched the Renfrewshire derby against Morton after the visitors had equalised with 20 minutes to go.

There is one game before the split in the Championship too, with Renfrew now two points ahead of Inverness Caley Thistle in fifth. Renfrew travel to Ayr United next Sunday, while Caley Thistle head to Hutchison Vale.

In the SWFL Cup, Inverurie Locos, Armadale Thistle, Glenrothes Strollers and McDermid Ladies reached the semi-finals with wins over Huntly, Drumchapel Utd, Kilwinning and Dumbarton Utd respectively.    In the SWFL Plate, Linlithgow Rose needed extra time against Dunfermline Athletic to claim their semi-final spot, where they join Musselburgh Windsor, Edinburgh University Thistle and Grampian Ladies.

Rossvale have extended the lead at the top of the SWF Championship to 14 points after coming from behind to beat Ayr United 2-1 in Cumnock.

Ayr United grabbed an early lead via Claire Docherty, who latched on to a rebound after a McBlain free kick had been saved in the first minute of the game. Ayr looked determined to hold on, Charlotte Ferguson in goal in good form to maintain the lead for the first half.

Rossvale were awarded a penalty in the 50th minute and the league’s top scorer Megan Whiteford made no mistake from the spot. Before Ayr could respond, Rossvale captain Lauren Coleman had put the visitors ahead and the Glasgow side held on for what could be a significant win in their promotion push.

Elsewhere, Renfrew brushed aside Hutchison Vale 11-0, East Fife beat Westdyke 8-1 and Morton and Dryburgh Athletic played out a goalless draw.

Stenhousemuir moved top of SWF’s League One on goal difference after beating St Mirren 3-0 at home, while rivals Falkirk also won 8-0 against Giffnock to keep pace in third. Two dramatic injury-time goals from Bonnyrigg Rose’s Chelsea Lowe then Saffron McCabe allowed the Midlothian side to leapfrog opponents Queen of the South in the table with a 3-1 win. Airdrie Ladies beat Edinburgh Caledonia 2-0 in the capital.

In the regional SWFL, a 3-2 comeback by Harmony Row in the South league against leaders Ayr United Development allowed Kilwinning to take the top spot 3for the first time with a 5-2 win over Dalbeattie Star.

Inverurie Locos extended their lead at the top of SWFL North with a 4-0 victory over Arbroath, with second-placed Elgin City drawing 1-1 with Westdyke Thistle, and in East a 1-0 victory in the Fife derby for Glenrothes Strollers over Dunfermline Athletic saw them move back above their rivals in the table behind leaders Armadale Thistle. Drumchapel Utd won 5-0 against Cumbernauld Colts in the SWFL West.

A new funding competition for women’s and girls’ football teams across the Highlands and Islands has been launched with support of ScottishPower.

The leading renewable energy company is the new title sponsor for SWF’s Highlands and Islands league, which kicks off on Sunday, but the competition is open to all grassroots women’s and girls’ clubs across the region.

Four prizes of £1,000 are up for grabs to help clubs tackle key challenges and provide more opportunities for women and girls to play football. Example challenges could include transport to fixtures, new kits, training equipment, upgrades to facilities or coaching expenses.

The competition is the latest initiative in the landmark three-year partnership deal which is dedicated to energising women’s football at every age and stage across the country. ScottishPower will work closely with SWF in supporting the women’s game for both this and future generations by driving equality and diversity all the way from grassroots to elite.

Players from Buckie Ladies, Caithness, Clachnacuddin, Nairn St Ninian, Ross County, Ross and Cromarty and Sutherland attended a photocall in Inverness to launch the competition ahead of International Women’s Day and were joined by Scottish Women’s Football CEO Aileen Campbell and Julie Keough, brand director at principal partner ScottishPower.

Commenting, Aileen Campbell said: “Our Highlands and Islands league is about to kick off its first season with a title sponsor, giving football in the Highlands additional investment and visibility, and it can only grow from here.

“That’s why it’s fantastic to announce even further support from ScottishPower ahead of International Women’s Day. This funding competition recognises the additional challenges that face clubs across the Highlands and Islands, and will support clubs where it is needed most. Good luck to all senior and youth teams who apply.”

Julie Keough, ScottishPower said: “A key aim of our landmark partnership with SWF, and the SWPL, is to energise and empower the women’s game right across the country. That means supporting the creation of opportunities for as many women and girls as possible to play football whether they’re in Boroughmuir or Buckie. We’re incredibly proud to be the first title sponsor of the Highlands & Islands League and are excited to see the competition kick off.

“It is also important to recognise the challenges that clubs out with the central belt can face, particularly when it comes to access to funding, equipment and facilities, and that’s another area where we want to help. The competition prize fund we’re launching in Inverness today will hopefully help to address some of those challenges and support the fantastic growth of the game we’re already seeing across the Highlands & Islands and are excited to be a part of.”

Applications for the fund can be made here.

The ScottishPower Highlands & Islands League begins its 2024 season on Sunday with the following fixtures:

Caithness v Ross & Cromarty

Buckie Ladies v Sutherland

Ross County v Orkney Women

Clachnacuddin v Nairn St Ninian

Dryburgh Athletic and Rossvale have reached the Championship and League One cup final after winning their semi-finals at Kelty Hearts.

Dryburgh were 30 seconds from a penalty shootout against Ayr United after a tightly contested 120 minutes when Stacey McFadyen latched on to a ball at the corner of the box and poked it under Sarah Ferguson in the Ayr goal to set up a third final appearance in a row.

Rossvale goal machine Megan Whiteford scored a hat-trick in a 5-2 win over Renfrew Ladies in the later game, grabbing the second final spot for the Championship leaders.

Sarah Wardlaw and Lauren Coleman also scored for the Glasgow side, with Renfrew skipper Emma Baird and Holly McIndoe scoring for Renfrew.

The two winners will face off on the 21st April at the Indodrill Stadium in Alloa.

In League One, Falkirk beat Bonnyrigg Rose 3-0 at home, while Stenhousemuir won by the same scoreline against Airdrie Ladies. In the battle of the bottom two, a last minute goal from Hunt earned bottom side Dundee West a precious point and kept them three points behind their opponents Giffnock Soccer Centre. Queen of the South beat Edinburgh Caledonia 5-0 in Dumfries.

Heart of Midlothian picked up two trophies in the Women’s Youth Scottish Cup2, their 14s besting Celtic in a penalty shootout and their 18s also beating Celtic in rearranged finals after they had been frozen off in November.

In the 16s final, Rangers ran out 3-1 winners over Celtic in extra time, after it had been 1-1 in the 90 minutes.

Kelty Hearts will host two thrilling Scottish Women’s Football semi-finals on Sunday in the Championship and League One Cup, SWF’s most senior league cup competition.

As part of SWF’s mission to engage with communities across Scotland, Fifers will get to see Ayr United face Dundee side Dryburgh Athletic at 12 noon, followed by Rossvale versus Renfrew Ladies at 4pm at New Central Park in Kelty.

Locals will be able to watch the games for just £5, with concessionary tickets £2 and free entry to under 16s. These can be purchased on the Fanbase app by searching Scottish Women’s Football.

Both matches look to be highly competitive. Ayr United are in a rich run of form, currently sitting second in the Championship and were semi-finalists last season, going out to eventual winners Edinburgh City. They will hope to go one better on Sunday as they face a Dryburgh side looking for a hat-trick of final appearances.

Also semi-finalists last year, Rossvale are the current Championship leaders, comfortably in pole position for promotion to the SWPL, and they will face a Renfrew Ladies side who ran them all the way for the playoff spot last season.

The Championship and League One Cup is in its third year and was set up to provide a high-level league cup competition for clubs sitting in the national leagues below the SWPL. Dryburgh Athletic lifted the inaugural cup in the 2021/22 season, followed by the now-folded Edinburgh City last season.

Commenting, Scottish Women’s Football CEO Aileen Campbell said: “I’m delighted we are bringing two major national semi-finals to Fife, offering girls nearby the opportunity to take in top competitive action. And with under 16s going free, it’s a great opportunity for families to take in exciting games involving good teams from Ayr, Dundee, Glasgow and Renfrewshire.

“The Championship and League One cup is a great opportunity to showcase the clubs who play national league football just below the SWPL, and spectators are sure to see some highly competitive action on Sunday.”

Scottish Women’s Football can confirm the Falkirk Foundation have notified of a decision to fold their development team with immediate effect and withdraw from the SWFL East league.

The club’s development side has forfeited a number of games and Falkirk have stated they will not be able to fulfil fixtures for the rest of this season.

Scottish Women’s Football understands the challenges faced by clubs to remain sustainable, but this is nonetheless a disappointing development.

Withdrawing at any point after fixtures have been published and games played is hugely disruptive to all other teams competing and to the reputation of the game as a whole. Clubs applying to enter teams in the SWFL must demonstrate clear resilience, the ability to attract and retain players by valuing them publicly and a determination to fulfil all league and cup fixtures.

As per the rules, Falkirk Development’s withdrawal from SWFL East means the results recorded in the league against them this season will be declared null and void. The league tables have been updated accordingly. SWFL East will continue with eleven teams.
